It's often been said; if you want to see change, or any form of improvement, then be the change. If you want to become a person you have never been or seen, then get around those people who are.
If you've never met people with good morals, ethics, or have a high standard in real life, then read the Torah. The Book of Psalms and Proverbs are always a good place to start.
Watch quality videos or programs online that elevate your thinking. Volunteer to help a friend. Do charitable work. Learn something new. Keep growing. Keep improving. Be honest with yourself.
People who are perpetually improving themselves with integrity exist. But no one is perfect. So if you really want to be the absolute BEST you can be, then spend more time with GOD.
We are in this world to improve. Sometimes we have to change our environments to facilitate it.
Since the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp to deliver you and to defeat your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy; and He must not see anything indecent among you or He will turn away from you. Deuteronomy 23:14
People who want to improve their habits can not spend the majority of their time around people who are where they no longer wish to be. The adage, "those who walk with wise people become wise" is a almost a cheat sheet to success. But the one with understanding also knows that some people took a path and paid a price they do not wish to pay.
There is no "overnight success". There is only seed time and harvest.
So what do you do? Lean in on GOD. Schedule daily time with the living word (Torah/ Old Testament Bible) and ask it to guide you. Yes, I am being serious.
It's a living book. That means it's alive. Make GOD your Primary Mentor, your Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Best best friend forever(BBFF).
Some people don't believe in GOD. But how else do you explain the great symphony of the cosmos?
No one will know but you. Just start your day by waking up (another gift from GOD), saying thank you for doing so (awakening). Then respectfully ask GOD to be with you throughout the day. You may find the long list of things you thought were important gets rearranged and edited. That's okay. You may find certain appointments get rescheduled, canceled, or made. That's okay too.
You may find you have more time for your spouse and children and less time after work at "Happy Hour". I assure you; that's okay too. You may become calmer (less anxiety and depression). That's wonderful. It's a common side effect to your new Associate.
God is not your "Mr. Belvedere", pimp, side piece, genie in a bottle, or maid. God is your benevolent Father and Mother. (i.e. Abba, Ima, Papa, Poppy, Mama, Big Daddy, Big Mama, Nonna, Bubba etc.) You get the idea.
Better to approve the Nameless as a child to a Parent than as a stranger putting a coin in a machine asking for service. With GOD, it's always personal. It's Family.
Treat the Holy One with reverence, honor and respect. If you bow to Pope Leo XIV as Pope Francis before him and neglect the One who gives you breath every day, then you've got it all wrong.
God does have emissaries. Respect them as you would a messenger who facilitated an answered prayer from God. It can be anyone. So be kind to everyone. But sincerely thank the One who provided it.
Don't be surprised if God ignores some of your less than lofty ideas. I've had quite a few myself.
If GOD is in charge, then you may have to learn how to wait for the best. God just wants to see if you are really trusting your Creator or if it's just play play to you. That may not seem okay to you initially, but trust me, first class living beats just getting by any day.
You will eventually start to realize that like any good parent, God just wants you to grow up. Mature people know when to lay down their toys and focus on what really matters. You will learn to prioritize,
how to let go of the past and how to become more discerning with your time, attention, the company you keep and your finances. It may not happen over night, but you will gradually see changes. The first side effect is a sense of calm. Your soul knows that Someone GREATER than you has the wheel. Trust and praise God throughout the process.
If it's a worthy goal, you will get it in "due season". Even if it's not a worthy goal, why would you want it? Sometimes you get it just so you can learn what truly matters in life. But learn you must. We all do.... eventually.
